Transformer Oil Testing with Client Witnessing – 100% Transparent

100% transparent transformer oil testing in Monterrey: ASTM D877, D971, D1533, witnessed by the client or documented with photos and video. Mexico.

Transformer Oil Testing with Client Witnessing – 100% Transparent

We perform 100% transparent oil tests. We are members of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS), which gives us access to current standards and regulations such as IEEE C57.106, IEEE C57.104 and IEEE C57.147, as well as professional forums and a wide range of research material. We are the ONLY laboratory in Mexico that allows tests to be performed in front of the client or produces reports with current photographs or videos of the tests.

Transformer oil surrounds and insulates the coil windings in high-voltage transformers. During operation, the oil oxidizes and oxidation products accumulate in the transformer oil. As a result, the dielectric strength of the oil decreases, which can lead to electrical discharge. The possible consequences are functional failures and even explosive fires. To prevent this, electric utilities around the world use our tensiometers to ensure oil quality.

During the aging process, the interfacial tension between the transformer oil and water decreases. Interfacial tension therefore becomes a quality criterion: if it falls below a predefined limit, the oil must be changed. Transformer oil quality control is often carried out in accordance with ASTM D-971. Our tensiometers measure according to this standard using automatic or semi-automatic measurement procedures.

ASTM D-971 specifies that measurements are made using the Du Noüy ring method. With this method, a ring suspended from a force sensor is moved from the heavier aqueous phase into the lighter oil phase. Our tensiometer software calculates the interfacial tension from the tensile force of the liquid lamella that forms beneath the ring.

On one hand, the measurements ensure that the transformer operates reliably. On the other hand, costly premature oil changes can be avoided, because the remaining serviceability of the oil is determined.
