Launch cable reel. When working with an OTDR, you may have heard of launch cable reels. Because of this, and because of how useful they are when working with optical fiber, in this blog we will talk about their function.
Let us start by mentioning that the launch cable reel is a piece of fiber optic cable with connectors used with OTDRs to mitigate the dead zone; it is connected to the OTDR and to the fiber optic network when tests are being performed.
Thanks to its characteristics, between 100 and 2000 m can be wound in the box that contains the reel, which is an advantage, since being in a relatively small box it is fully portable, making it easy to take into the field.
It is important that the launch cable is compatible with the OTDR, as well as with the type of installation being done, including fiber type, length, connector, dead zone, and required modal distribution.
This product allows us to perform fiber optic tests while minimizing the effects of the measuring equipment’s pulses; it also makes it easier to measure the insertion loss of the connection between a near end and a far end of a fiber optic link.
This equipment is extremely useful because, as mentioned above, it minimizes the dead zone at the start of the network, allowing more accurate measurements; therefore defining the length of the reel is key to successful use, because if a
very long or very short one is used, the number of errors or erroneous measurements can be reduced.
Remember that the dead zone is the initial stretch of an installation that an OTDR cannot read accurately; it tells us how close the OTDR can read a reflective event
At Fibra Market, our launch cable reels are compact and lightweight, made of high-impact-resistant plastic, and are available in several fiber configurations, which makes them adaptable and an excellent option for fiber optic installation.
