ASTM D2216.
This is the standard laboratory test method for determining the water content of soil, widely used in the United States as well as in many other places around the world. The core of this standard is the complete process of drying a soil sample in a conventional laboratory oven for twenty-four hours. However, the process takes quite a long time. On the other hand, halogen moisture analyzers significantly reduce the time needed to determine the water content of soil. This study focuses on evaluating the applicability and accuracy of halogen moisture analyzers compared with conventional laboratory ovens for obtaining soil moisture content. For this purpose, different types of soil, both cohesive and granular, are used.
Moisture contents were tested using both methods: the conventional method of measuring soil moisture content,
according to ASTM D2216 as the reference. The results obtained with the halogen moisture analyzer were compared with the results obtained by the conventional method. The results agreed, and the comparison showed that the halogen moisture analyzer is a fast, simple and relatively inexpensive alternative method for determining soil moisture content. Consequently, a halogen moisture analyzer, as an energy-efficient device, can measure soil moisture content with a reliable and relatively automated process that minimizes user errors.
